12/31/2007. This is the first prototype, first flown November 26, 1951, by Glosters' Chief Test Pilot, Squadron Leader W.A. Waterton. On June 29, 1952, while on its 99th test flight, the aircraft developed elevator flutter, and subsequently lost both elevators. The aircraft crash-landed at the A&AEE airfield at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire, UK, and was damaged beyond repair due to a post-crash fire. The pilot, Squadron Leader W.A. Waterton, escaped injuries. |
