McDonnell Douglas 98 F-4J Phantom II

01/31/2021. Remarks by Jack McKillop: "The F-4J was the second and last F-4 to be placed in production for the USN and USMC. (The first was the F-4B.) The F-4Js had an enlarged wing and tail revisions to improve take off and landings aboard an aircraft carrier. They were powered by two 17,900 lb (8,119 kg) General Electric J-79-10 turbojet engines and was equipped with the following electronic equipment: The fuel capacity of the aircraft was increased to 1,998 gal (7,563 l) internally.

The first flight of the YF-4J was on June 4, 1965 and the first production F-4J flew on May 27, 1966. A total of 522 F-4Js were produced and delivered between December 1966 and January 1972.

The aircraft in the photo was a F-4J-27-MC and served with the USN's aerial demonstration team, the "Blue Angels".

The centerpiece of the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum is the World War II Essex Class aircraft carrier Yorktown (CV-10). This F-4J, which is on loan from the National Museum of Naval Aviation at Pensacola, Florida, is shown on the flight deck.
