This aircraft was developed under the guidance of Prof. Brunolf Baade and was built by VEB Flugzeugwerk Dresden (Volkseigener Betrieb Flugzeuwerk Dresden, Publicly Owned Aircraft Plant Dresden). The aircraft was registered on February 20, 1958 and made its roll-out on April 30, 1958 and its first flight on December 4, 1958. It made its second and last flight three month later on March 4, 1959; it crashed while on approach and all four crew were killed.

The second prototype, a Baade 152 II (DM-ZYB c/n V-04) made only two flights, on August 26, and September 4, 1960. The third prototype, a Baade 152 II as well (DM-ZYC c/n V-05), was never flown.

Apart from the registered designation shown in the header, the aircraft was also known as VEB Dresden Type 152, VEB Dresden Baade 152, and VL-DDR 152.
