Redesignated AF-1E in 1962, it served several USN squadrons, the last squadron was VA-216 "Black Diamonds" aboard the USS Hancock in Vietnam. Struck off charge it was stored at Litchfield Park, Arizona, awaiting disposal to the scrap heap.

In 1971 it was bought by Flight Systems Inc, Newport Beach, California and registered as N400FS it was used to test missile radar guidance systems. Thereafter it was stored at Mojave, California.

In 1991 it was bought by Larry Mockford, registered N9255, a long restoration started. In 2002 it was registered to Richard Sugden of Wilson, Wyoming and reregistered to N400FS. The colour scheme of the only remaining airworthy FJ-4 is simular to that of the FJ-4s of the Fleet Air Gunnery Unit at NAS El Centro, California in the late fifties.
