Vickers 808 Viscount

05/31/2006. Remarks by Jack McKillop: "This aircraft was delivered to Ireland's Aer Lingus Teoranta (Air Fleet Ltd) on March 20, 1959. The "St. Colmcille" (Columba) is one of three 808s delivered in 1959 and used to replace the Douglas DC-3s then in service. Modified in 1967 through the addition double cargo doors on port side, forward of the wing.

After 11-years service with Aer Lingus, it was sold to the Hamburg, Germany-based airline Air Commerz on March 31, 1970 and registered D-ADAM; this was one of the first aircraft operated by this new airline. Unfortunately, Air Commerz ceased operations in 1972 and the aircraft was repossessed by Aer Lingus on September 1, 1972 and stored at Dublin, Ireland.

On January 3, 1973, this Viscount was sold to the Sultan of Oman&'s AF and given the s/n 504. On September 21, 1976, it was sold to Scibe Airlift in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and registered 9Q-CBS and later sold to Air Charter Service Zaire and reregistered 9Q-CAN in 1983. It was withdrawn from use and placed in storage in Zaire in November 1984; its fate is unknown."
