09/15/2006. Remarks by
Jack McKillop: "This is the second of three XP-84-RE prototypes ordered in March 1945. This aircraft flew in August 1946 and established a US national speed record of 611 mph (983 kmh) on September 7, 1946 at Muroc Army Air Field, Muroc, California, USA. Unfortunately, a British Gloster Meteor F.4 set a new international speed record at RAF Tangmere, Sussex, England on the same day when it reached a speed of 616 mph (991 kmh)."
