Remarks by Jack McKillop: "This YAL-1A-BN, a modified Boeing 747-4G4F, is based at Edwards AFB, Muroc, California, and assigned to the 417th Flight Test Squadron, 412th Operations Group, 412th Test Wing, Air Force Flight Test Center, Air Force Materiel Command. It made its first flight on January 6, 2000 and was delivered to the USAF on January 21.

One of the Missile Defense Agency's highest priority programs is the Airborne Laser (ABL) Program which involves putting a weapons class laser aboard the YAL-1A and using that laser to destroy ballistic missiles. The YAL-1A is a prototype that employs a highly-modified, 747-400 airframe equipped with sensors, lasers and sophisticated optics to find, track and destroy ballistic missiles in their boost or ascent phase."
