09/30/2008. Produced as a P-80A-1-LO the aircraft was modified as the XP-80B, featuring a thinner wing and the 4,000 lb (1,814 kg) st Allison J33-A-17 turbojet. Thereafter it was modified into the world record chasing XP-80R, powered by a 4,600 lb (2,087 kg) Allison 400 (J33 with water-methanol injection). In this configuration and flown by Colonel Albert Boyd, it captured the world record with an average speed of 623.738 mph (1003.809 kmh) over Muroc Dry Lake, California, USA, on June 19, 1947. The aircraft is preserved at the National Museum of the USAF, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. |
