09/30/2008. Original designated B-29D an order for 200 aircraft was placed in July 1945, this number was cut to 60 after WW II ended and the type was redesignated B-50A in December 1945. There were no prototypes, although seven aircraft were allocated to testing, and the first B-50A, s/n 46-002 c/n 15722, was flown for the first time on June 25, 1947. Eventually 79 B-50As were produced. Pictured is the second B-50A that was accepted by the USAF in October 1947, redesignated EB-50A the following month and was used by Boeing and both the USAF Air Research and Development Command and the USAF Air Materiel Command. It was lost in a fatal crash in Maryland on November 24, 1952. |
