06/18/2007. Remarks by
Weldon Stevens:
"The best looking B-36 is the one modified for
nuclear experiments (originally XB-36H). Unless someone got a picture
of it taking off or landing, it couldn't be photographed because it
was kept in a secluded area with guards. It had a different nose and
the crew comparment had thick, heavy lead lining. There was a nuclear
reactor in the rear. They tested the reactor, but the plane never
flew under nuclear power. Even though I had a top secret clearance
and was often in the nuclear area, I could not go near the plane. Any
inventory that I had to do of test instrumentation had to be done by
someone else. It was scrapped at Ft. Worth, Texas, USA, 1958."
