05/31/2008. The Jockey was designed by Rex K. Pierson to a requirement stated in Spec. F.20/27 as an interception single-seat day fighter. Powered by a 480 hp Bristol Mercury IIA air-cooled radial, it first flew at Martlesham in April 1930. In January 1932 the Mercury was replaced by another nine-cylinder air-cooled radial, the 490 hp Bristol Jupiter VIIA.

During spinning tests at Martlesham in June 1932, the aircraft failed to recover from a flat spin. While the pilot bailed out to safety at 5,000 ft (1,524 m), the aircraft was wrecked.
