de Havilland D.H.100 Vampire F.Mk.III

02/26/2005. Remarks by Jerry Vernon: "N6884D is ex-RCAF 17036. It was last heard of registered to a company in Hominy, Oklahoma, USA.

After we retired the 442(Aux) Squadron Vampires from service in the fall of 1956, several were ferried away promptly, but two of them languished around the Vancouver airport for several years. By 1960, N6882D and N6884D were sitting on the edge of the ramp in front of the old main terminal building, with the tires flat, etc. Later that year, they were taken into the B.C. Air Lines hangar and made airworthy by several of our RCAF(Aux) NCOs, then were ferried to the US by Flying Officer Jim McInnis.

The new owners, Formetal Division of Fliteways Inc., West Bend, Wisconsin, USA, had purchased 27 of the surplus RCAF Vampires, they were registered N6860D to N6886D. Fifteen ended up with the Mexican AF, and a large number were sold to private owners in the USA. At least 11 of them still exist, mostly in museums. Only a couple are still airworthy.

The other Vampire in the photo is N6882D, ex-RCAF 17012, c/n EP42304, that was sold by Formetal to the Mexican AF, became FAM 13, and is currently on display at the Colegio del Aire, Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico."
