The registration CF-CUD shown on the aircraft is incorrect, it has never been applied to a Canadian Pacific Airlines (CPA) DC-8 nor has the livery. This livery was used on earlier CPA airliners and has probably been applied to the photo by Douglas or CPA for marketing or public relation reasons.

The following text from Aviation Week is not unique to the aircraft pictured:
09/04/1961. Los Angeles, California, USA: Supersonic flight was achieved recently in a dive by a Douglas DC-8 during tests of a new extended leading edge wing. On the flight, the DC-8 climbed to 50,000 ft (15,240 m) while carrying the equivalent of a normal payload. The jet transport slightly bettered the speed of sound diving through 40,350 ft (12,299 m) - 660 mph (1,062 kmh) at that altitude.
