What you need to know, and more, about sharing your images with us

Do you need to have the print or negative in order to submit an image?
Except for digital camera images, the answer is "Yes" in most cases. But you may also submit an image for someone else who has no means or desire to be involved in scanning and sending material to us and has approved your doing so. We do not knowingly publish images scanned from publications or copied from other websites. We do sometimes publish images from photo sharing websites if the photographer invites us to do so. However we desire to minimize duplication with other websites. Of course many times our photos will appear on other websites, with or without our approval.

We prefer contributions of new or rare aircraft types and old photos
Currently, our goal is to increase the number of types and variants that are shown on our site. Old and rare photos of common types are also welcome regardless of condition. It is better to send what you have and allow us to pick and choose than to guess what we might use.

Photo selection and editing
The selection of which photos are added to the site, and when, is the responsibility of Ron Dupas, based on fair treatment of all contributors. We are looking for sharp images without parts of the aircraft cut off or obscured by vehicles, people, other aircraft etc. We can adjust brightness, contrast, colour etc., rotate to horizontal and crop images but we need images that are no less than 1000 pixels wide to do so. Expanding a smaller image to that size will normally not be usable.

Expert and professional photographers: we will not edit your images without your approval if you let us know that's your preference. But all images will be compressed to so enthusiasts with slow internet connections can have a better experience.

Scanning requirements
Most people have scanners which routinely produce the quality of scan that we can most effectively use. However, you may send a test scan and we will respond with suggestions if needed to improve the results.

Information requirements
Tell us what you know about the photo: where was it taken, by whom, when, and interesting stories and anecdotes. We can work with you on editing the text in a nice story viewers will appreciate.

Methods of contributing photos
E-mail photos to Ron Dupas. Large numbers of images are probably better sent on a CD. Contact Ron for a mailing address. Some contributors send material in small numbers now and then over a period of many years. Some send all their contributions in one batch. Some contributors have sent their prints to be scanned and returned.

What can you expect after you send us images?
There is no limit on the number of images you can submit. We have thousands of images ready to be posted to the website. We rotate through the material in a regular sequence so that no contributor has to wait too long to see some of their images posted on the website. The rotation takes about 3 months. Our current ability is to post 25 new photos each month. Keep in mind, however, that our mission is to focus on adding types we don't have already and rare photos.

Do you give up any rights by placing your photos on the website?
Absolutely not. Although we prefer to have exclusivity, you retain complete authority to decide about granting permission for use of your photos to anyone for any purpose and to use them any way you want. Requests we receive to use your photos will be relayed to you unless you authorize us to grant permission on your behalf.

Will your photos be copied off the website?
We have no way to prevent this happening. However, the photos on the site are of the lowest quality that still provides an acceptable viewing experience so it is highly unlikely that anyone will be able to sell anything they download. Beginning in 2007 we began adding a grey band on the bottom of the photos identifying the copyright holder or photo collector. In spite of these measures, you may find your photos on other websites, especially on aviation discussion forums.
