"June 20, 1961. The first flight configuration of the giant Saturn C-1 heavy space vehicle, assembled in the dynamic test stand at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville. The assembly of the three-stage rocket in the new 204-foot tower was completed the past week. The new facility permits a checkout of the mechanical mating features of the multi-stage rocket, a determination of the natural bending characteristics of the assembled rocket and the effect of simulated flight vibrations on different stages of the vehicle. Fueling practices will also be made while the rocket is in the tower. The configuration shown here is identical to the one which will be launched from Cape Canaveral, for the first time, in the last quarter of this year. The two upper stages are inert. The rocket is 163 feet in height." |
