04/19/2007. Remarks by Jack McKillop: "This was the 549th 727 built and it made its first flight on March 13, 1968. Ten days later, it was delivered to the US airline Frontier Airlines of Denver, Colorado, registered N7278F. It was then sold to Braniff International Airways of Dallas, Texas, on March 13, 1972 and reregistered N408BN.

For the celebration of the Bicentenial in 1976, Braniff contracted Alexander Calder to design an colour scheme for a 727 flagship of the US fleet. The "Flying Colours" as the creation was known, was only applied to N408BN. The name of Braniff was omitted, but the name Calder appeared 14 ft (4.27 m) long on the forward fuselage.

It was next sold to a leasing company on May 12, 1982 and immediately leased back to Braniff until February 19, 1985.
