McKillop: "This aircraft was purchased by the Pittsburgh
Steel Co. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, registered NC18977 and
delivered on December 14, 1939. In March 1942, it was "drafted" by
the USAAF and designated C-40D-LO, s/n 42-38348. On July 27, 1942,
it was transferred to the RAF under Lend-Lease as a Lockheed 12-A,
RAF s/n LA623, and was assigned to the Lockheed Aircraft Corp.
facility at Speke Airport, Liverpool, England. It later served with
No. 24 Squadron at RAF Hendon, Middlesex, England, and the
Metropolitan Communications Squadron. After the war, it was sold to
a private corporation, registered G-AGWN and converted back to a
civilian configuration by Short Bros. and Harland and then to
several companies including Skyways Ltd. in 1947. |
