Supermarine 398 Attacker F.Mk.1

11/30/2013. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Conceived in the same month that the Spiteful entered flight test and mating that fighter's laminar-flow wing (with radiators removed) with a new fuselage and tail, the Type 392 was powered by the new Rolls-Royce RB.41 turbojet which was to enter production as the Nene. Three prototypes were ordered in August 1944 of which two were to be navalised.

The first prototype was covered by Specification E.10/44 and the navalised examples by E.1/45. The first prototype flew on July 27, 1946 with a 4,300 lb (1,950 kg) st Nene, but a 5,100 lb (2,313 kg) st Nene 3 (or Mk 101) was later standardized for the E.1/45 prototypes – the first of which was flown on June 17, 1947 – and for subsequent production aircraft whieh were designated Attacker F.Mk.1.

The naval prototypes were fitted with A-frame arrester hooks and long-stroke landing gears, but folding outer wing panels and full navalisation were applied to the series model ordered in September 1948, and first flown on May 5, 1950. The 43 Attacker F.Mk.1s and sixteen FB.Mk.1s (with provision for two 1,000 lb [454-kg] bombs or four 60lb [27 kg] rockets) were followed by 84 Attacker FB.Mk.2s with the Nene 102 engine.

A further batch of 36 "de-navalised" Attackers was built for the Pakistan AF. The Attacker had a gun armament of four 0.787 in (20 mm) cannon and entered RN service in August 1951, being retained until1954 and then flown for two more years by the Volunteer Reserve."
