11/15/2006. Remarks by Bill Ewing: "Built by Victory Aircraft, Malton, Ontario, Canada, this is one of the Lancasters of 111KU (SAR Unit), RCAF Station, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Each S&R Unit was the responsibility of its host Station, hence the 'Training Command' lettering under the lower forward fuselage. The S&R Unit at RCAF Station Greenwood wore 'Maritime Command' and the one at Trenton, 'Air Transport Command'. This Lancaster (and others) was found to have cracks in the main spar and put into short-term storage at Winnipeg until fall, 1960. At that time, a volunteer crew flew it into storage at Saskatoon, Saskachewan and it was dismantled. Other SAR Lancasters were donated as memorials across Canada." |
