08/15/2008. Léon Vavasseur was the designer of the Société Anonyme Antoinette of Puteaux, France, and his successful Antoinnette IV, first flown on October 9, 1908, was the first in a range of pioneering aircraft.

In 1909 the design was licensed to a number of aircraft pioneering companies, including the Albatros Flugzeugwerke formed by Dr. Walther Huth at Berlin-Johannisthal, Germany, late 1909. This Albatros-built aircraft was powered by a 50 hp Antoinette eight-cylinder water-cooled V-engine.
