08/15/2008. Designed by F.G. Miles, the tandem two-seat M.12 was built by Phillips & Powis at Woodley Aerodrome, Reading, to the specifications stated by Colonel Charles Lindbergh as a private aircraft for use by Lindbergh and his wife during an extended mission in Europe during 1937.

The sole produced M.12, powered by a 200 hp Menasco Buccaneer B6S six-cylinder air-cooled inverted in-line engine, was registered G-AEKW and flown for the first time on August 22, 1936, with F.G. Miles at the controls. The CofA was issued on January 28, 1937.

Pictured here with Lindbergh at the controls, the M.12 remained in the UK when the Lindbergs returned to the USA at the end of 1937. In November 1941 the aircraft was impressed into the RAF, s/n HM503 and briefly used by Maintenance Command Communications Squadron, between September 1943 and January 1944.

The civil registration was restored on May 28, 1946; owner became Southern Aircraft (Gatwick) Ltd., being sold to E.G.F. Lyder in 1947, and to B.P. Pini of Broxbourne in July 1948. Subsequently it was converted to open cockpits, but while touring Spain it crashed on January 1, 1950.

The aircraft stayed in Spain till Connie Edwards discovered it in a scrap yard near Tablada AB, Seville, in December 1973. It was sold to Louis Casey in November 1975 and moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, to be restored to static display. Partly completed the aircraft was donated to the RAF Museum at Cosford, England, were the aircraft is presently reaching completion at the Michael Beetham Conservation Centre.
