02/05/2005. Remarks by Howard Rundberg: "A program at NAS North Island, San Diego updated and converted numerous F-4J's to F-4S's. It was analogous to a previous program, the Bee Line project, which converted F-4B's to F-4N's. F-4S number 158360 shown above in flight east of North Island and over Coronado Beach was the prototype airplane. The Navy F-4J carried AIM-7 Sparrow-III Missiles, AIM-9 Sidewinder Missiles and had the AWG-10 Weapons Control System including the APG-59 Radar. The F-4J had the same wide tire and thick inboard wing as the F-4D and subsequent USAF models. In the F-4 photos on the National Museum of Naval Aviation web site, the in-flight view is of an F-4J which did not have the IR dome." |
