Douglas DC-3A-456 Dakota Mk.III

01/31/2011. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "This Douglas Model DC-3A-456 was produced at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA, as a C-47A-10-DK Skytrain for the USAAF under serial 42-92664. After completion the aircraft was transferred to the RAF, and was designated Dakota Mk.III, s/n KG455. With 233 Squadron it participated in Operation Coup de Main / Operation Tonga, delivering the 6th Airborne division into Normandy on the morning of D-Day, June 6, 1944.

On April 16, 1946 it was transferred to the RCAF and operated under the RAF serial KG455. In the 1950s it was assigned to 137 Transport Flight which was formed at RCAF Lachine (Dorval), Quebec on August 1, 1952 and transferred to 1 Air Division as a component of 30 Air Material Base at RAF Langar, England on October 20, 1952. The Flight was tasked with transporting personnel and supplies as well as disassembled aircraft, and with ferrying aircraft to and from overhaul and rebuild facilities in England. The Flight was also tasked to test fly Aircraft that had been so refitted.

On June 26, 1970, the aircraft was redesignated CC-129 under the CAF designation system, and reserialed 129024. It was withdrawn from use on April 6, 1982. Presently it is preserved at the Canadian Airborne Forces Museum at Petawawa, Ontario, finished in a camouflage livery and wearing the serial KG455 again."
