04/15/2018. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "The mid-wing all-metal P.170S was a tandem two-seat variant of the single-seat P.70S and was only marginally larger than latter. The type was developed in parallel with the low-wing P.180 and both types were designed by Jean Pottier.
The first aircraft was built in France by Jean-Pierre Chagnon, this aircraft was powered by a 50 hp VW 1600 engine. With the test registration F-WYIK (c/n 4) it made its first flight in 1979. After gaining its CofA it was registered on September 11, 1980 as F-PYIK to the Constructeurs Amateurs Aviateurs du Val-d'Oise at Aérodrome de Pontoise-Cormeilles-en-Vexin, some 20 mls (32 km) north-west of Paris. On March 13, 1989 the aircraft was registered to the designer, Jean Pottier of Les Mureaux.
The P.170 did not gain the popularity of the P.180S and only limited numbers were built, including the pictured aircraft. This was built by Charles Bire of Mauleon, France, and with the test registration F-WYLG it was first flown on March 4, 1982. After receiving its CofA it was reregistered F-PYLG on June 25, 1982. February 12, 1990, it was reregistered to Didier Ravaux of La Roche Guyon, seven years later it was reregistered to Jean-Michel de la Boessiere of Quimper on June 2, 1997.
Another one was built in the Netherlands. Construction of this was initiated April 22, 1982 by S.H. Gillebaard and partners, all students of the Technische Hogeschool (Institute of Technology) in Delft. On October 3, 1986, the Belgian registration OO-114 was reserved by the General Aviation Club at Antwerp, however, this was not taken up. Finally, the aircraft was registered as PH-AFP to Gillebaard and H.M. Reyers on August 21, 1996. Fitted with an 80 hp Rotax 912S the aircraft was first flown in 1996. Having encountered an engine failure at Teuge Airport on February 15, 1998, it had the same experience fifteen years later. On March 6, 2013 the aircraft took off from Teuge Airport but failed to climb and the pilot made an emergency landing on a meadow near the airport. In the forced landing the three propeller blades broke off and the nose was damaged, however, both occupants escaped injuries. The aircraft was deregistered May 15, 2013."
