02/28/2014. Remarks by Walter van Tilborg: "This side-by-side two-seater was derived from the single-seat Sparrow ultralight and the earlier single-seat Sparrow Sport Special experimental. The pictured prototype flew in 1990 with a 52 hp Rotax 503 engine, later received a 66 hp Rotax 582LC. The type became available in kit form from Carlson Aircraft, Inc., East Palestine, Ohio, USA.
Sparrow II: The initial model with a 66 hp Rotax 582LC, optional engines were the lower-rated Rotax 503 or 532LC, or an 80 hp Rotax 912. The Sparrow II had the fuel tank installed in the fuselage, but optional wing tanks were available. It could be built with a tail wheel or tricycle landing gear.
Sparrow II XTC: Higher performance model for engines up till 100 hp and the prototype Sparrow II was modified to the new standard. The fuselage fuel tank was replaced by wing tanks, it received an improved cabin interior and the prototype was first flown with an 82 hp Mosler 82X engine, this later being replaced by an 82 hp Subaru EA81. The Sparrow II XTC version was suitable for other engines in the 66-100 hp range such as Rotax 912, Continental C85 and O-200-A. The Sparrow II XTC was available with choice of a tricycle type (most aircraft) and tail wheel type landing gear.
Sparrow-Ette: Introduced 1992 and meeting new US ultralight rules for use as a two-seat trainer. This version had a larger wing area and full-span flaperons, but dimensionally was similar to the Sparrow II. It became available with a 65 hp Rotax 582 or other engines in the 60-70 hp range such as Rotax 532. It also had optional wing folding."
