Grumman G-64 SA-16A Albatross

11/30/2007. Remarks by John Voss: "This aircraft was built for the USAF as a G-64 SA-16A-GR and was one of three (48-596, 48-597, 48-603) transferred to Department of the Interior (Trust Territory) and operated by PanAm.

First I pictured the Albatross just after a water landing at the island of Ponape (presently known as Pohnpei, Micronesia), the seaplane facility was a WW II era base developed by the Japanese Navy and still in use as there was no usable airfield on the island.

Later I captured the aircraft departing Ponape for the ca. 435 mls (700 km) flight to Truk (presently known as the Chuuk Islands, Micronesia)."
