Two S-62 prototypes were completed, with 1,050 shp T58-GE-6 engines
derated to 670 shp. The maiden flight on May 22, 1958, and
subsequent world-wide demonstration flights, were made by N880....
(The) FAA type certificate... was awarded on June 30, 1960.
The following text from Aviation Week is not unique to the aircraft
pictured:
09/19/1960. A Sikorsky S-62 single-turbine helicopter has been delivered to Los
Angeles Airways. The 9-12 passenger amphibious aircraft will be the
first turbine-powered helicopter in scheduled airline service.
04/26/1965. Los Angeles - Two of the four helicopters by San Francisco and
Oakland Helicopter Airways were involved in accidents in a 24-hr
period on April 15 and 16, both because of power losses. One of the
two Sikorsky S-62A's was damaged beyond repair. The first accident
occurred during a night pilot check flight.... A malfunction of one
of the... engines cause the pilots to shut down the engine and make
an autorotational landing.... The boat-hulled S-62A made a normal
touchdown... but flipped end-over-end while the rotors were still
turning.... Ingestion of a large bird, possibly a pigeon, is blamed
for the second accident, caused by a power failure over the
Embarcadero area of San Francisco. Autorotation let-down was
complicated by severe vibration. The tail rotor struck a power
pole....
