Johan Visschedijk: "Short S.38 (also known as S.A.1) Sturgeon, showing prototype, designed as naval reconnaissance bomber first flight in June 1946. Other versions: S.38 (also known as S.A.1) Sturgeon PR.Mk.1, production naval reconnaissance bomber; S.39 (also known as S.A.2) Sturgeon TT.Mk.2, carrier-based target-tug, with lengthened nose section; S.B.9 Sturgeon TT.Mk.3 land-based naval target-tug, photographic nose and all deck arrester gear removed, and hydraulic wing wingfolding gear replaced by manually operated mechanism. All versions were powered by two 2,080 hp Rolls-Royce Merlin 140 engines."
