de Havilland D.H.100 Vampire F.Mk.I

2006/09/15. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "English Electric produced 1359 Vampires in several versions, including all 226 Vampire F.Mk.Is. Shown is the fifth production aircraft. Later it became a flying engine test bed when it had its de Havilland H.1 Goblin D.Gn.1 turbojet engine replaced by the engine intended for the Venom and the Comet, the de Havilland H.2 Gost. First the engine was tested in the outboard engine nacelles of the Avro Lancastrian VM703. The Vampire was used for high-altitude testing, flying in its new configuration for the first time on May 8, 1947. In April 1951 TG278 became instructional airframe 6851M."
