11/15/2014. Remarks by
Johan Visschedijk: "When the USAAC bought the C-26Bs, the order was originally for six aircraft; however, the first two planes, serialed 33-292 and 33-293, were redesigned for the Pratt & Whitney R-1340 radial engine and designated as C-29s. The C-29 used the same basic airframe as the C-26 series aircraft, flown by a crew of two, it had a larger cabin which could accommodate seven passengers, one more than the C-26. The Pratt & Whitney R-1340-29 updated radial engines produced 575 horsepower each for a total increase of 250 hp over the C-26. This increased power gave the C-29 a top speed of 154 mph (248 kmh), 16 mph (26 kmh) faster than the C-26.
The USAAC used the C-29s for coastal patrol and observation missions for a few years in the mid-1930s. Captain Hezekiah McClellan received the DFC for flying this C-29 throughout Alaska from June 12 till August 14, 1935.
The C-29s were transferred to the US Treasury Department in the late 1930s and were re-designated FP-2Bs."
