Johan Visschedijk: "Built as a Mk.I this Spitfire was first flown at Eastleigh aerodrome, Southampton, UK, on September 14, 1940. Progressively modified with different cameras, engines, propellers and wing extensions, it was known as a Spitfire PR.Mk.VA by December 1942. On January 16, 1943 it left for Canada aboard the S.S. Manchester Progress, arriving at Montreal, Quebec, on February 10. It was transported to RCAF Station Rockcliffe, Ottawa, Ontario, on February 17 and transferred to the RCAF on February 26, 1943, retaining the RAF serial. It was used by the Photographic Flight at Rockcliffe for camera development work. Fitted with an F24 camera modified to shoot upwards and flown by F/L Percival, X4492 was used to photo the total eclipse of the sun on July 9, 1945. The aircraft was struck off charge on September 2, 1947."
