McDonnell Douglas A-4N Skyhawk II

08/31/2012. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Retaining the basic airframe and uprated engine of the A-4M Skyhawk version, the A-4N Skyhawk II for Israel was fitted with a new navigation/weapons delivery system including a Lear Siegler digital computer, Singer-Kearfott inertial platform, and an Elliott Automation head-up display which greatly improved accuracy. In common with earlier Israeli Skyhawks, the A-4Ns substituted 1.18 in (30 mm) DEFA cannon for the 0.787 in (20 mm) guns of the US aircraft.

First flown on June 12, 1972, 117 A-4Ns have been built with USN BuNos. 158726 to 158743, 159035 to 159052, 159075 to 159098, 159515 to 159545, and 159799 to 159824. The pictured aircraft above (produced under BuNo. 159536) returned to the USA in 2001, after service with the Israel AF. In 2002 it was sold to ATSI (Advanced Training System International), of Mesa, Arizona, which registered it as N269WL (and still is as of this day).

In late 2003 ATSI leased the aircraft to AVdef (Aviation Défense Service) of Saint-Gilles, France, and registered F-ZVMD it was operated as a target tug for the French Navy. On October 31, 2006, AVdef returned the aircraft to ATSI and it took up again the previous registration N269WL."
