05/31/2010. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Model 1049G, the most successful version of the Super Constellation, first flown on 7 December, 1954, and introduced by Northwest Airlines on 1 July, 1955, was an improved Model 1049E version with 3,400 hp Wright 972TC-18DA-3 Turbo-Cyclone compound engines. For long-range operations they could be fitted with 600 gal (2,271 l) wing tip tanks bringing maximum capacity to 7,750 gal (29,336 l), an increase of nearly two-thirds over the tankage of the original Model 49 Constellation.
Maximum take off weight rose to 137,500 lb (62,369 kg) and, in service, some were modified to operate at weights of up to 140,000 lb (63,503 kg). Often known as Super Gs, 42 of these aircraft were delivered to domestic carriers (28 to TWA, ten to Eastern and four to Northwest), 59 went to foreign airlines (fourteen to Air France, eight to Lufthansa, six each to KLM and VARIG, five to Air-India, four to TCA, three each to Cubana, TAP and Thai Airways, two each to Iberia, LAV and Qantas, and one to Avianca), and one went to the Hughes Tool Company."
