Johan Visschedijk: "Only two Orion 9Es were built, both were acquired by Transcontinental & Western Air. In spite of bearing the E suffix as part of their designation, these aircraft did not incorporate the improvements introduced on the earlier Model 9D. Powered by the 450 hp Wasp SC1, the first of these two aircraft (NC12278 c/n 193) was fitted with Goodrich de-icers five months after entering service with TWA; after two accidents it was repurchased by Lockheed in early 1937 but was not repaired. The other Orion 9E (NC12283 c/n 195) served with TWA for two years until acquired in 1935 by Wiley Post to be modified as the Orion-Explorer."
