Johan Visschedijk: "From the
Do 217 E-2 were derived the Do 217 J-1 and J-2 three-seat pursuit interceptor and night fighter versions with a new unglazed nose station, more powerful armament and special equipment with radar equipment. The different missions were achieved by suitable conversion kits; flying over oceans was possible with the installation of maritime rescue equipment. The fuel system in the wing and in the fuselage could be extended to a total volume of 1,287 gal (4,870 l) by installing an additional tank in the rear freight hold (instead of the bombs). Powered by two 1560 hp BMW 801 L engines, the type was first flown on March 15, 1942, and a total of 130 Do 217 Js were built."
