Grumman G-20

09/30/2008. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Pictured is the first of eight G-20s (M-O-1 to M-O-8, c/n 357 to 364) built for the Aviacion de la Flota de Mar, these unarmed aircraft were similar to the JF-2s used by the USCG. Ordered in 1936 it was flown in December of the same year, all eight were delivered by the following February.

Operated by the Observation Squadron from the Base Aviacion Naval Commandante Espora, Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires Province, they often were detached aboard the cruisers Almirante Brown and Veinticinco de Mayo. In 1939 four G-15s were added, these were similar to the J2F-4 of the USN, having a constant pitch propeller and lacking the tail hook.

In 1948 the Argentine Navy received thirty-one surplus USN aircraft, twenty-two J2F-5s and nine J2F-6s, making it the largest foreign operator of this Grumman aircraft. Nicknamed "Zapatilla" ("Shoe") or "Pato" ("Duck"), they were used in many roles: observation, forward air control, torpedo spotting, submarine support, photo reconnaissance, target towing, medical evacuation, and search and rescue. The last aircraft was withdrawn from service in 1959."
