02/15/2006. Remarks by Howard Rundberg: "I enjoyed flying in a B-29 out of Norton AFB in San Bernardino, California, in the summer of 1946. Our airplane wasn't flown often and during preflight it was necessary to force accumulated oil out of the lower cylinders of the engines, so we manually turned the props to rotate the R-3350s through a few turns. The trailing edge of the props were sharp and we used shop rags to protect our hands. My position was radar operator and that was my window on the left side in front of the wing. Our own flight-test pilots would see us flying and make simulated attack runs on us in P-47s and P-80s, often passing in front and causing bumpy air. Usually we were up several hours, so I would take my lunch. During a holiday open-house we participated an air show along with our other planes and I must not have looked very glamorous walking out to the B-29 in front of the crowd wearing a parachute, straw hat and carrying my lunch box."
