Stinson O

08/31/2012. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "On April 16, 1931, the Escuela Nacional de Aviación (National Aviation School, predecessor of the Honduran air force) was formed within the Honduran army. In the same year New Zealander Lowell Yerex founded TACA (Transportes Aéreos Centroamericanos, Central American Air Transport) in Honduras (and later in other countries), using Stinson aircraft.

Early 1933, Yerex was under contract from the Honduran government to buy training aircraft, and therefore he visited Stinson in February. Stinson promised a flying prototype within three months. Designed by Robert 'Bob' Hall (pilot and co-designer of the Gee Bees), the two-seat biplane prototype was flown in May 1933. Honduras bought five aircraft, three went to China and one to Brazil.

The pictured prototype remained in the USA, after it received its CofA the registration became NC13817, and subsequently the aircraft was sold to Lycoming Motors. By 1936 it was with Joe Prosser Aviation in Long Beach, California, and on December 7, 1941 it was sold to the Love Field Flight School at Love Field, Texas, while in 1944 it was deregistered. The model O was unique as it was the only open cockpit aircraft ever built by Stinson."
