Johan Visschedijk: "In 1931 E.M. "Mattie" Laird designed the Super Solution for the Cleveland Speed Foundation to challenge the Travel Air Mystery Ship. Construction lasted about six weeks and on August 22, 1931, the aircraft was flown for the first time.
Flown by Jimmy Doolittle, it entered the Los Angeles, California to Cleveland, Ohio, Bendix Trophy Race on September 4, 1931, finishing as first in 9 hr, 10 min, 21 sec. Thereafter the Super Solution set several more records. In 1932 the aircraft was modified, encountering severe problems, subsequently it was stored. Sixteen years later the remains donated to the Smithsonian. Flying replicas were built 50 and 75 years after the first flight, registered NR12048 and N22ML respectively.

The first replica was built by members of the Florida Sport Aviation Antique & Classic Association and of the
EAA Chapter 17, Knoxville, Tennessee, the construction was started in Florida in 1974.

In 1979 the project was transferred to the EAA Museum at Hales Corner, Wisconsin, where it was finished in 1981, registered as NR12048.

The second replica was built by James S. Moss of Puyallup, Washington, USA and first flew on 6 December 2000. Later the aircraft was sold to Kermit Weeks of the Fantasy of Flight Museum at Polk City, Florida. On June 6, 2006 it was reregistered to the registration of the original 1931 Super Solution, NR12048."
