Heinkel He 162 A-2

09/30/2014. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Built in early 1945 at the Heinkel factory at Rostock/Marienehe, this aircraft became the personal aircraft of Leutnant Gerhard Hanf of II/JG 1 "OESAU" at Leck in Holstein. Coded "Red 1" the aircraft was named Nervenklau (literally nerve stealer). The aircraft was captured at Leck in early May and under the Foreign Equipment number "FE-489" it was subsequently shipped to the USA aboard the HMS Reaper in July 1945.

Initially stored at Freeman Field, Seymour, Indiana, the aircraft was transferred to Muroc Dry Lake, California (presently Edwards AFB) in 1946. Allotted the Allied Technical Intelligence Unit number "T2-489", it was flown once, by Lieutenant Bob Hoover (later a famous test and demonstration pilot). In 1947 the aircraft was donated to the University of Kansas at Lawrence, a year later it was acquired by Eddie Fischer of Kansas City, Kansas. Subsequently it was sold to Ed Maloney of the Planes of Fame museum in Claremont, California, which is now based in Chino."
