Remarks by Walter van Tilborg: "The Michalak R-1 Special single-seat sport aircraft was developed from the Lasher Renegade I, but differed in having a new design thinner wing, revised tail surfaces and modifications in the construction. The sole example, built by James E. Michalak, was powered a 65 hp VW1650 engine and registered N64JM it made the first flight in July 1976. The registration was cancelled September 27, 1993 when still in name of builder at that time."
